The Great Wave off Kanagawa / 神奈川沖浪裏

Probably the most famous example of ukiyo-e is Hokusai’s Great Wave off Kanagawa (神奈川沖浪裏 : Kanagawa-oki Nami Ura ) which is part his 36 views of Mt. Fuji collection.

Recreating each of the 36 pictures in the style of shin-mitate-e (New Parody Picture) seemed the perfect way to start my shin-mitate-e project. The literal translation of shin-mitate-e is “look and compare picture”.

Essentially the idea of shin-mitate-e isn’t to reproduce an image perfectly, but to be playful with the materials used to create the parody picture. Hence, honey bread sticks, a chocolate cone and a creme caramel were used in the creation of this artwork.

Of course, this being the first shin-mitate-e in the series, a lot of lessons were learned and techniques for transferring creme caramels will be perfected (although the consequences of making mistakes is quite delicious, so perhaps a few mishaps will continue for a while).

A mishap with the first attempt to balance a creme caramel on a bowl.

Since mitate-e translates as “look and compare picture”, I will post the original masterpieces by Hokusai.
